Why we make dhikr
Dhikr is the remembrance of Allah - keeping the heart and tongue busy with His praise. The Quran commands it directly: 'O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance' (Surah al-Ahzab 33:41), and promises its fruit: 'in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest' (Surah ar-Ra'd 13:28). A tasbeeh simply helps you keep count as you remember Him, so your tongue can stay with the words while your heart stays present.
The tasbeeh after every prayer
A beloved sunnah is to glorify Allah after each obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that whoever says SubhanAllah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times after every prayer - that is ninety-nine - and completes the hundred with 'La ilaha illa Allah, alone with no partner', his sins are forgiven though they be like the foam of the sea (Sahih Muslim 597a). This counter uses a well-known thirty-three / thirty-three / thirty-four pattern to reach one hundred (Sahih Muslim 596a).
Beads, fingers, or a screen
Counting dhikr on the fingers is the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who told us to count on them, 'for they will be questioned and made to speak' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1501). Many scholars also allow aids such as prayer beads or a digital counter, while others prefer the fingers - so treat this tool as a convenience, not a ruling. What matters most is the presence of the heart. Your count stays on your device and is never sent anywhere.
Common questions
What is a tasbeeh?
+
A tasbeeh is a count of dhikr - short phrases of remembrance such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar. The word also names the beads or counter used to keep track. This page is a free digital tasbeeh you can use on any device.
How many times should I recite after prayer?
+
A well-known sunnah is thirty-three SubhanAllah, thirty-three Alhamdulillah, and thirty-three Allahu Akbar after each obligatory prayer, completing one hundred with 'La ilaha illa Allah...' (Sahih Muslim 597a). This counter offers a thirty-three / thirty-three / thirty-four pattern that also reaches one hundred (Sahih Muslim 596a). Both are reported.
Is it okay to count on a phone instead of beads or fingers?
+
Counting on the fingers is the sunnah and is best. Using prayer beads or a digital counter is permitted by many scholars as a counting aid, though some prefer the fingers; opinions differ. Please follow the guidance you trust. (This content is pending scholar review - please report any correction.)
